Computer Aided Process Planning(CAPP) system plays a major role in a Computer Integrated Manufacturing(CIM) system. Because of the variety of manufacturing environments and the existing difference bewteen theory and practice, it makes the current CAPP system cannot entirely serve as the desired functions. Hence, how to meet real machining process and how to flexibly extend and maintain in the future are very important for a CAPP system. In the thesis, a new object-oriented rule-based CAPP system for convenient extension and maintenance is proposed. The proposed CAPP system allows users to construct their own process rules through an expert system. An algorithm which can determine the suitable machining operations according to the information of the parts, available machining centers and cutters is developed such that the proposed system will meet the actual requirement of the machining process much more. Current implementation of the proposed CAPP system is for the rotational parts.
