A new adaptive approach for finite volume approximation of elliptic boundary value problem is developed. A weak-residual type error estimator for the finite volume element method (FVEM) is also proposed. It is shown that the error estimator is preferably based on elementwise, instead of volumewise, calculation. It turns out that the finite element method (FEM) and FVEM do have many improtant similarities in error estimation and adaptive process. Various numerical results are given to show the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed approach.
