This thesis aims at exploring Lord Byron's cynical attitudes
towards women in his masterpiece Don Juan. Because of his
aristocratic background, great fame and masculine charisma,
Byron attracts many women and in turn gets into complex and
annoying liaisons throughout his lifetime. Since creative
writing is bound to be affected by personal experiences, Byron
the man so often overshadows Byron the poet. Thus, in order to
study his attitudes towards women in his work, his amorous and
family experiences with women should not be altogether ignored.
The introduction of this thesis states the aim of the study and
summarizes Byron's life and literary career. Chapter one
discusses the female characters in Don Juan who play the role
of active seducers. Chapter two explores the poet as the
narrator who offers a running authorial comment on women in
love and marriage. Though sometimes he commends female
virtues, quite often he overtly and definitely condemns the sex'
s foibles and vices. Chapter three focuses on the poet's moral
ambivalence about women in his satirical and rarely ideal
portrayals of women, attributable to his extraordinary
circumstances and experiences. The conclusion shows that the
poet's cynicism on women is influenced by classical poetry in
general and by his great predecessor, Pope, in particular. The
views of other major romantic poets on the sex are brought into
brief comparison with Byron's with the conclusion that with
negative views of women, Byron is indeed a rebel among his
romantic peers.
