Basically speaking this undertaking is a further develop- ment and articulation of two previous N.S.C. projects (Nos: NSC80-0301-H002-6, NSC81-0301-H002-20) of theoretical and em- pirical studies on lifestyle, spatial choice and the sphere of livelihood. More specifically we attempt to :(1).trace, through different channels, the way some types of "cultural agents" perform their function of cultural diffusion (capital, technologies, and lifestyles) and, therefore, transforming the spatial structure of the Taipei metropolis in recent historical process of political, economic, and social democratization and internationalization; and (2).assuming the differences of urban spatial usage among social groups of different status and lifestyles, identify some cultural-agent groups and compare as well as analyze the diversities environmental recognition and experiences. It''s our hope that, an empirical study on Taipei ---the gate-way of Taiwan would develope some understanding about (1). the channel and process (e.g., the specific lifestyle and mani- festation over space, both intra- and inter- national) of the diffusion of Western cultural in a third-world country; and (2). the spatial effects of this diffusion phenomenon. We believe that a probing into the intertwined relationship among time/ space/agents is the only window which would hopefully reveal the process and meaning of spatial restructuration and urbaniza- tion of a third-world country, e.g., Taiwan, situated in an imbalanced center/periphery globle cultural relationship.
