We provide in this work a clear outlook of leaky wave and explore its radiation patterns. In chapter one, the focus is on the leaky phnomenon of microstrip line higher modes; general properties and physical explanations are given. Though the subject of study is the microstrip line, relevant discussions may well apply to other structures where leaky wave is concerned. In chapter two, rigorous formulas for the calculation of radiation patterns of top-covered microstrip line are derived by the use of Green's function and accurate current distribution. Chapter three shows the theoretical results, which will be compared with the radiation patterns of leaky microstrip line without top cover. Finally, we'll discuss the general characteristics of leaky wave radiation patterns.
