The purpose of this study were to review literatures about "forgiveness",and present a whole viewpoint for further studies in psychology andcounseling. Researchers usually payed fewer attention to forgiveness because of its complexity and involvement in many different fields. Until recent years, however, it caught more and more psychologist''s eye, and more studies and reports were presented. According to the purposes, the frame of the study was described as follows: 1.The meanings and myths of forgiveness; the time to use forgiveness and the outcomes of forgiveness. 2.The rationales of forgiveness from four fields -- psychology, counseling psychology, philosophy, and theology. 3.The reviews of empirical studies about forgiveness. 4.The strategies and the application of forgiveness in counseling. At last summary and suggestions were presented.
