Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and butterflies wereTaichung City in 40 patches of eight habitat types: woodland,ark, cemetery, river bank, freeway embankment, cultivated plotThe patches were delimited by roads, walls, cleared open areas orl barriers, and ranged in size from 0.08 to 14.7 ha. Ten mammalsspecies occurring per patch ); 46 birds; 10 reptiles and 4ro to four species occurring per patch ); and 29 butterflies were recorded. Animals ( the number of species ) was higher in the least urbanizedte species richness increased with patch area. Some speciesn patches were synanthropic, such as Suncus murinus and Musmmals ); Prinia subflava, Prinia flaviventris and Passer montanusdromus formosanus and Takydromus stejnegeri ( reptiles, two ''pecies '' ); and two familes of butterflies, Nymphalidae and Pieridae. More species ofreptiles and amphibians were retained in two smaller habitatone larger patch equal to their combined area.
