在以侯選人為中心的美國總統選舉中,各候選人為吸引選民的注意,獲得選民的青睞,莫不挖空心思,使出渾身解術,極策劃、參與各類電視競選活動,而其中又以電視辯論最為人矚目與重視。一方面,它往往為整個選戰活動掀起高潮,另一方面,它所擁有之高收視率,使其他的電視競選活動難以望其項背而令人不敢小看它的威力。但是電視辯論對總統大選的影響力是否與其收視率成正比?影響力又是表現在那些方面?這是一個值得探究的問題。
基本上,本篇論文係從政治傳播學的觀點出發,假設電視辯論對選舉的影響力是存在的,而以「形象塑造」及「議題設定」為主軸,研究該影響力產生的原因與所造成的結果,同時,候選人如何利用電視辯論作為競選致勝的工具,亦是探討的主題之一,希望透過本文為電視辯論在大選中的角色作一釐清。
最後。筆者以一九九二年大選電視辯論為素材進行個案研究,除了將九二年大選情勢作一綜合解析外,並從侯選人形象與辯論議題兩個角度來探討電視辯論的內容,並從辯論前後選民對侯選人的支持程度來研究電視辯論對選民之影響。
In candidate-centered American presidential election, to attract the attention and win the favor of the voters, every candidate do all he (she) can to plan and participate in various TV campaign activities, among these, the TV debates are always the first priority concern, and play a significant role in presidential election. On one hand, it climaxes the election campaign, on the other hand, its rating is so high that both candidates and voters dare not look down upon its influence. However, does the TV debates have significant influence on presidential election? on what aspect does it influence? this is a interesting problem.
Basically, this thesis is based on the viewpoint of political communication, assumed that the influence of TV debates on presidential election is positive, and try to analyze the origin of the influence and the consequence TV debates made from two angles of image-making and agenda-setting.
Finally, the author will make a case study on the presidential election of 1992, by means of it, the influence and role of TV debates in the process of American presidential election will become more comprehensible, the author will also make a comprehensive analysis on the general situation of 1992 presidential election. In addition, to analyze the debates'' content from image-making and agenda-setting, and eventually, the author try to find out the linkage between candidate TVdebates and voters'' voting intention by comparing the approval rating before and after the debates.
