The multimedia database systems have become more and more important due to its wild applications in many fields such as CAI, CAD, etc. A multimedia database has to handel a large amount of data, thus it will slow down the speed of query. In this point of view, the index method, which can speed up the speed of query, is extremely important for a multimedia database. So far, most of the index methods have two main defects: 1) they seldom support the content retrieval for a multimedia database; 2) they are very time-consuming in the feature matching process. In this paper we propose a new index organization method named Domain Class Tree(DCT) which can improve the defects mentioned above. Some experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, and the results are analyzed from the viewpoints of system and index method. A working multimedia database system based on DCT is also implemented to verify its feasibility.
