The aim of this paper is to develope an optimum design approach for reinforced concrete columns by a multicriteria objective function. Although there are many papers presented about the optimum design of reinforced concrete columns , most are concerned about the minimum cost design.In this paper , both minimum cost design and maximum effective stiffiness are given for reinforced concrete columns . The design variables are the dimensions of the cross section of the columns and the diameter of longitudinal bars.Numerical solutions are given and results are discussed and compared.
