The purpose of this study was to explore the knowledge and attitude of schizophrenic patients'' caregivers toward caring for the patients. By convenience sampling, one hundred twenty schizophrenic patients'' caregivers were drawn from the outpatient department of the Taipei City Psychiatric Center. The result of the study revealed that : (1) The average score of the knowledge of caregivers was higher than general population. The subjects have better knowledge about the disease process, and knowledge about therapy was relatively less correct. (2) The average score of the attitude of caregivers was higher than gene-ral population. The acceptance dimention was the most positive, and the help tendency was the least. (3) Variables of patients, including self-care ability, sex, religion, insight, work, thesick time, symptoms and the recovery level, were associated with the knowledge or attitude of caregivers. Variables of caregivers including age, education, social class, religion, relationship with patients, time of staying together, the information provider, the need of knowledge, other patient among families, perception of symptoms and the utilization of social resources, were associ- ated with the knowledge or attitude of caregivers.(4) The predic- table variables of the knowledge were the attitude score, the existance of the information provider and the awareness of the day treatment. (5) The predictable variables of attitude were the knowledge score, the recovery level, the positive symptoms and the experience of the admission of day treatment. (6) The knowle- dge and attitude were strongly correlated(R=0.6). The results of this study may help nurses understand the knowledge and attitude of schizophrenic patients'' caregivers, and serve as a reference for providing community mental health services and home-care.
