The study investigates the irregularity of rainfall both in time and in space in light of their fractal dimensions. Box-counting method was employed to calculate the fractal dimension of hourly and daily rainfall time series for rainfall station of no-rthern, central and southern Taiwan area. The result show that difference of average fractal dimension of dry seasonand wet season is 0.016 and 0.17 for northern and southern Taiwan, respectively, indicating the irregularity of rainfall occurrence in dry and wet season is significantly different for southern Taiwan, however, not as significantly different for the north. Fractal dimension of rainfall occurrence calculated for each statison is found to be closely related to station elevation, thus, exemplies the influence of orographic factor on rainfall characteristics which calls for the consideration of orographic influence in raingage network design.
