This research studied what kind of competitive strategy the R.O.C. medium and small monitor firms would have taken facing the competition from Korean ones in the U.S Market. The purpose of this research includes the following: 1. To examine under what industry competitive conditions the R.O.C. monitor firms owns more advantages or disadvantages compared with Korean ones. Is the R.O.C. monitor industry under disadvantageous conditions in general? 2. To examine the difference of strategy adoption between firms under advantages and those under disadvantages in terms of individual competitive ability. The results are as follows: 1.For the R.O.C. monior industry: (1)Among five competitive conditions, four are disadvantageous (government support, industry growth, relative input factor and economic scale, in decending order). The only advantageous competitive condition is value-addition. (2)The R.O.C. monitor firms are under disadvantageous condition in comparision with Korean ones. 2.For individual firms: (1)The decending order for advantageous competitive abilities is :R & D ability,Manufacturing ability , human resource ability and marketing ability. (2)The decending order for disadvantageous abilities is :general ability and financial ability. 3.Strategy adoption: For the industry under disadvantages: Firms enjoy advantages on general ability tend to adopt focus strategy more often than those facing disadvantages; Firms face disadvantages on financial ability tend to adopt defensive strategy more often than those enjoying advantages; Firms enjoy advantages on hyman resource ability tend to adopt differential and market-developing strategies more often than those facing disadvantages; Firms enjoy advantages on R & D abiligty(general competitive condition) tend to adopt differential strategy more often than those facing disadvantages.
