Permanent magnet brushless motors with higher torque- to- inertia and higher efficiency have become a popular subject in the application of servo control systems. In the recent years, the idea of fault detection has been gradually applied to the brushless motor drive for safety and reliability. When a tool collides with the work-piece, the tool tip or servo mechanism might be damaged because of the abnormal load torque. This thesis investigates the abnormal load torque detection during the manufacturing process, the system estimates the unknown external load torque and then controls the motor to minimize the damage as an abnormal load occurrs. The experimental system is i mplemented using a high speed digital processor, the TMS320C30. Some simulated and experimental results are given to show the possibility of the proposed method.
