Electromagnetic suspension systems make use of magnetic force
to resist gravity so that the iron ball can be suspended on the
air without any mechanical contact. It is inherently a highly
unstable system. In this dissertation, an electromagnetic
suspension system including an electromagnet, an iron ball, a
position detector and a voltage-to-current converter is built in
the laboratory. It is well known that the electromagnetic
suspension system is nonlinear. To apply the linear control
theory, a linearized small signal model around the operating
point must be derived. Then, based on this linearized model of
the plant, a robust controller is designed to stabilize the
suspension system. It is required that the number of the
suspended iron balls can be increased from one (0.533kg) to
three (1.6kg). In mathematically modeling, the change of total
mass of iron balls and the variation of equilibrium point can be
treated as structured uncertainties of the plant. Then, the μ-
synthesis is applied to design a robust controller. After the
robust controller is obtained, the controller is implemented by
an anolog circuit. According to the results of experiments, it
shows that the μ-controller is superior to classical controller
and successfully achieves required robust performance.
