An energy dissipating device system for bridges is proposed in the prese-ntstudies.The system consists of linear fluid dampers and relatively rigid lin-king members with leverage. The effectiveness of this system in terms of reduc- tion of the relative displacement of the superstructure of bridges is proven a-nalytically first. Then the dynamic responses of bridges with/without base iso-lation, subjectedto strong ground motions, are computed numerically. It is fou-nd that not only the maximum relative displacement but also the maximum base s-hear can be reduced significantly when the device system has been used on the bridge. Therefore, it is suggested that this device system be applied in the d-esign of new bridges as well as in retrofitting of existing bridges with inade-quated aseismic strength.
