The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of a
base isolator, which is made of ADAS (Added Damping
and Stiffness) device and LRB (Laminated Rubber
Bearing). A elastic six degrees of freedom
superstructure and a bilinear isolator is used to investigate
the effectiveness of the ADAS-LRB isolator in
reducing the responses of the superstructure by using the
nonlinear modal superposition technique. The possible
design parameters of the isolated structures are also
suggested according the analytical results.Procedures for the
design of ADAS-LRB isolator are suggested based on the results
of parametric studies.Two steel space frames are then used to
demonstrate the design process. The differences in base shear,
story shears and story drift ratios between the base-isolated
structure and the non-base-isolated structure are investigated
according to the results of time-history dynamic analyses.
Consequently, reduction factor for the design earthquake loads
to be considered in designing an ADAS-LRB isolated structure is
recommended.
