(Their Eyes Were Watching God),追述簡妮如何歷經三場不
由她揚眉吐氣的婚姻躍伸到發言主位的過程。結論旨在將女性欲望與荷氏
的「說話者策略」("speakerly" strategy)環環相扣以便更具體的顯現女
性欲望的恆跡。

The purpose of this thesis is to read Zora Neale Hurston's two
novels to disclose the differentiating forces of the feminine
desire that is otherwise locked within the rigid boundaries of
both racial and sexual distinctions and thus resigned to
oblivion by misreadings. "Feminine desire" marks a signifying
force of contradiction that disrupts the established rules and
undermines the dominant ideology in American society. Hurston
writes to open up the indeterminate space between the singular
Woman and the plural Women so that Woman can be different, pre-
gnant, autonomous, creative and differentiating. Both
alienated and involved in this "feminine" ambiguity Hurston
writes to dis- close the unresolvable contradiction of being a
black in a racist and sexist society. The present thesis is
divided into four parts. The Introduction defines the term
"feminine desire," as opposed to "female desire." Feminine
desire is seen as a transgressive textual movement set into
motion by attentive readers. Chapter One focuses on Hurston's
first novel, Jonah's Gourd Vine, to problematize any simplistic
reading of the parable/title "Jonah's Gourd Vine." Rather, the
impossibility of a "correct" reading of the title parallels the
difficulty of John to hold on to a stable subject position--
gourd vine--for support. Chapter Two focuses on Hurston's most
popular novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, to trace the
emergence of Janie as a speaking subject, after three
suffocating marriages. In Conclusion I propose to link
feminine desire with Hurston's "speakerly" strategy so as to
better concretize the traces of such feminine desire.
