John Fowles's ~UA Maggot~U (1985) reveals the paradox of
emancipation, which is essentially discursive and ideological.
The discourse of emancipation is paradoxical in that it always
involves a dialogue between revolting agents and what they
attempt to revolt against. This paradox is not only presented
as an inescapable predicament but also as a critical strategy
in ~UA Maggot~U. Imbued with ideological connotation, this
novel critiques sexuality, difference, patriarchy, reality and
history, and at the same time betrays its own ideological
contradiction: it always needs to represent these ideologies to
subvert them. By entitling my thesis "~UA Maggot~U and the
Politics of Criticism," I intend to argue that representation
can be as tactical as to exert subversion by subverting itself
first. This novel displays a critical strength in its
representation as well as in its critique of writing,
interpretation and even criticism. These three domains overlap
with each other, as the novel suggests, to open a space for
different voices, including those of the characters, the
narrator and the author, to contest with each other.
Interpretations derived from the characters, the narrator and
the author reveal multiple dimensions of representation, which
are founded on the relations among these voices. In these
relations operates power incarnated in ideological dominance
and resistance. In this light, representation cannot avoid
being ideological, and hence political.
