The Development of the Learning Society Theory ABSTRACT This study is to analyze the development of thetheories concering the learning society. There are fivepurposes to the study: (1) to make a thorough inquiry oflearning society in terms of meanings, origins, characteristics, and functions; (2) to review thedevelopment of the learning society theories; (3) tocriticise and integrate the theoies of the learningsociety; (4) to construct the indicators of the learningsociety for leading the direction to pursuit the learningsociety; and (5) to suggest the ways as regard to how tobuild the learning society. The methodology used arehistorical study and documentary analysis. That is, theresearcher has been reviewed the literature about thetheories of the learning society from 1968 to 1996. There are nine conclusions to the study: 1. The learning society is a mobilized society forlearning. 2. The learning society has sixteen characteristics,which are grouped into three domains--lifelong learning,personal fulfillment, and social development. 3. The learning society is provided with diversefunctions, and it is the future ideal society for thehuman. 4. The learning society and the credential societyare different in many developmental directions. 5. The development of learning society theoryincludes three stages, from ideal initiative, stableawareness, to practice and maturity. 6. The learning society is a future ideal concept anda necessary Utopian to become truth for the human. 7. The contents of the learning society theory are asfollows: the development of whole person, lifelonglearning, lifelong education, moral community, anddemocratic society. 8. The learning society has ten indicators. Thequantity of learning participation and the quality oflearning are two important componets of the learningsociety. 9. Long- term and well planned educational developmentis the tactics towards the learning society. There arefifteen ways to build the learning society. According to the above conclusions, the researchersuggests 1. to integrate scholars in different fields in orderto conduct the multidisciplinary studies; 2. to continuously study the theory of the learningsociety; 3. to continuously construct the indicators of thelearning society; 4. to build the local development programs of thelearning society; 5. to practice those tactics for building thelearning society.
