In order to survive in the keen competition nowadays, Taiwan’s manufacturingindustry must strive for the edge of competitive advantage. The application of information technology is one of the effective ways to accelerate theindustrial upgrade and competitive capacity. The focus of this study is todiscuss the relation of environmental/organizational factors with the use ofinformation technology in Taiwan’s manufacturing industry.The information technology is consisted of management information system(MIS)application, automation technique, and network application. The organizationalfactors in this study include organizational structure/size, characteristics ofMIS department, top manager support, organizational strategy as well as the typeof production process. Results of a mail survey study indicated that1. The degree of the IT usage in the industry has significant impact on the organizational competing and adoption of automation techniques.2. The organization horizontal complexity positively correlated with the MIS applications. Formalization and centralization are positively correlated with the automation technique and the network application.3. Size of organization positively correlated with the use of information technology.4. The MIS budget and MIS department position in the organization positively correlated with the use of information technology.5. The more often the manager uses the computer, the more the management systems are computerized. The attitude of manager toward IT also positively correlated with the use of network technology.6. Organizational strategies positively correlated with the use of network technology.7. The type of production has no impact on the use of IT.Thus the study suggests that while the enterprises import the new informationtechnology, they have to consider many different factors by many different typesof information technology. By the way, they shall emphasize on the integration ofeach information technology type, and keep aware to the application of the network.
