Abstract This thesis proposes an application of photovataic system; that is, using photovoltaic cell to drive lighting systems. The stand-alone system not only can be used in all kinds of operating environment, but also can help to suppress peak load of utility power so as to achieve a diversification of energy resources. In this thesis, maximum power point tracking is analyzed first, and then, the control strategy and hardware implementation are proposed. The dimming control methods for electronic ballast are discussed and compared. One of the dimming control methods is chosen as reference for designing dimming electronic ballast. Finally, computer simulations and hardware measurements are used to verify the theoretical discussions.
