In an optical fiber, polarized light is more easily disturbed than unpolarized light. In applications where unpolarized light can be used, the output stability can be improved by depolarization techniques. In this thesis, a passive depolarizer is studied theoretically and numerically. It has been found that Lutz's and Lyot's depolarizers correspond to two limiting cases in our analysis. In general cases, one can deduce from our results the optimal working conditions which are of primary importance in design and fabrication of a depolarizer.
