With the rapid growth of ecnomics and increasement of total highway mileages, a fast and automatic method for pavement inspection is required to improve inspection efficiency and decrease both the impacts on traffic and social cost. There exist numerous of intelligent automatic methods for pavement inspection, this study nevertheless focuses on integrated automatic inspection system - Intelligent Vehicle for Highway Safety Inspection. The present inspection items and their detecting methods are analysed tn application framework and detecting techniques for special environment in Taiwan will be constrcted. According to the application framework, 4 pavement engineering items - cracks, roughness, rut depth and skid resistance are chose to establish a data processing system based on database with Microsoft Access 7.0. The detecting data from Intelligent Vehicle for Highway Safety Inspection can be analysed and stored by the data processing system. The study reveals that present automatic inspection methods abro can be coordinated with the present domestic artificial inspection criteria or engineering demands and from the database the PSI can be evaluated for engineering decision makers.
