The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of elementaryschool stludents about their classroom learning environment.Data were collected through two phases.In the first phase,three questionnaires were employed to gather data from 1091 sixth graders in Taoyuan,Hainchu and Miaoli areas about their perceptions of the psychological,instructional,and physical aspects of their classroom learning environment respectively.T-test,one way analysis of variance,post-hoc comparison,and X-test were used to examine if there was any siginficant difference between boy and girl students and between urban and urual students in their perceptions of these three aspects of classroom learning environment. In the second phase, interviews with 68 students chosen from the 1091 students were conducted to obtain students'''' opinions about how to improve their classroom learning environment.Interview data were recorded,transcribed,and analyzed. Data analysis revealed the following results: 1 The students'''' percepltions of the psychological aspects of their classroom learning environment, including teacher-pupil relationship and peer relationship,were positive. 2 There was no siginficant difference in the perceptions of teacher-pupil relationship and peer relationship between boy and girl students and between urban and rural students. 3 The students strongly felt that their teachers were unfair in their relationship with students,and seldom talked to them individually. 4 Most of the students perceived their teachers providing feedback and didactic instruction more often in classroom teaching. 5 Most of the students perceived their teachers as being unenthusiastic and non-task oriented,and not providing opportunities for students to learn in classroom teaching. 6 Significant difference was found between boy and girl students and between urban and rural students in their perceptions about the instructional aspect of classroom learning environment. 7 The students'''' perceptions of room temperature,ventilation,light,size of class,and physical arrangement of classroom were positive; however,they held negative perceptions about the insufficiency of equipment in classroom, uncomfortable desks and chairs,noise, and limited classroom space. 8 Siginficant difference was found between boy and girl students and between urban and urual students in their perceptions of the physical aspect of classroom learning environment. Based on the findings, implications for how to improve elementary school students'''' classroom learning environment were prorosed.
