This study employed a questionnaire survey and two-stage cluster sampling of
public elementary schools in 11 administrative districts of Kaohsiung. The
participants consisted of 936 parents (454 fathers and 482
mothers) of 3rd- and
5th-grade students. The tools used in this survey included revised versions of
Hung You-yi(s "I-E Scale" and "Basic Personal Information Survey Form" and the
author(s "Scale of Parents(Irrational Beliefs" and "Scale of Parenting Styles.
" The date obtained was analyzed by statistica
l methods including the Pearson product moment correlation,t-test,one-way ANOVA
and chi-square test.
1.The most notable irrational beliefs of the parents of elementary school
students include a "blaming tendency(" "overconcern about
dangerous situations"
and a "frustration response."
2. There were no significant gender-related differences in parents'' scores on
the irrational beliefs scale and on various sub-scales.
3. There were no significant age-related differences in parents'' scores on the
irrational beliefs scale and on various sub-scales.
4. There were no significant differences in parents( scores on the irrational
beliefs scale and on various sub-scales correlated with their number of
children.
5.There were significant differences in parents'' overall score
on the irrational
beliefs scale correlated with their socio-economic status. Differences were
significant on eight sub-scales.
6. There was a significant correlation between parents( overall score on the
irrational beliefs scale and their locus of control. There were significant
correlations between locus of control and scores on most sub-scales.
7. The chief parenting styles of parents of elementary school students were
the "negligent parenting style" and "enlightened authoriative
parenting style."
Less common were the" authoritarian parenting style" and "permissive parenting
style."In addition the parents method of parenting their children was more
commonly "demanding"than "reactive."
8. There were significant differences in the irrational beliefs scale scores of
fathers with different parenting styles. Significant differences appeared on
eight sub-scales.
9. There were significant differences in the irrational beliefs scale scores of
mothers with different parenting styles. Significant differences appeared on
six sub-scales.
10. There were significant differences in the irrational
beliefs scale scores of
parents with different parenting styles. Significant differences appeared on
seven sub-scales.
11. There were significant differences in parenting styles correlated with
parents'' gender and socio-economic status. However ,there were no signific
ant differences in parenting styles correlated with age and number of child
ren.
12. As for the relationship between parenting style and locus
of control parents
with a "negligent parenting style" were more likely to have an external locus
of control than parents with an "enlightened authoriative parenting style."
1. Parents should rely on successful past experiences to strengthen their
interal locus of control.
2. Parents should spend more time in close contact with their children and
should try to better understand their own demands and their children''s
reactions and needs.
3. Teachers should take advantage of home visits to help parents recognize
their own irrational beliefs and establish beliefs that are more rational.
4.Materials including articles (posters (and booklets may be printed and used
to promote awareness of the salient points of emotional
education among parents
visiting schools or attending parent-child seminars.
5.Government authorities at various levels should copy the "pre-marital health
examination" approach and offer "effective parenting training for prosp
ective parents" at public hospitals.
6. Parent-child education instruction should be incorporated in the school
curriculum at different levels.
7. To overcome current obstacles to the implementation of
parent-child education
(schools at various levels should establish internal supply ementary schools
offering night classes.
8.Community parent-child education networks should be established.
