The mechanical property of solvent-welded poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) under γ-ray irradiation has been investigated. Morphologies of cleavage. tear, tensile and shear fracture are observed. Effect of temperature, dosage, and solubility parameter on mechanical strength are discussed. Methanol, ethanol, and N, N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) used are the bonding solvents. DMF is good solvent for PMMA. The solvent-selded PMMA showed the high mechanical strength at high temperature and dosage. The solvent affected zone (SAZ) is not directly related to the mechanical strength. The effect of methanol on optical property of irradiated and un-irradiated PMMA has been investigated. The transmittance of un-irradiated PMMA for different times of exposure to methanol at temperatures at 45℃~60℃ are observed. The scattering light intensity varies as λ-df. where df is in the range between 2.1 and 2.9. When irradiated PMMA immerses into methanol at longer time, the transmittance gradually recovery to the virgin PMMA.
