Lilium formosanum was sampled from 8 natural populations in Taiwan. The altitudes were variable from 750 m to 2880 m. Measure the 20 morfology andbulbs were collected and cultivated in the greenhouse of the departmentof botany in Taiwan university. Study the DNA extracted from leaves by RFLP - PCR (restriction fragment length polymorphism - polymerase chain reaction)next year. The data obtained from DNA analysed and morphology observations were used in a numerical taxonomic study. The result of DNA study shows that different clusters will be reduced by using different primers. However populations can be divided into two clusters by using leaves shape (LEAVE LENGTH / LEAVE WIDTH) and 5 morphology characters of vegetative organs. One include 霧社 population whose altitude is about 800 m, another is consist of 7 populations whose altitude are above 1000m.The result were coincide with the research made by Cheng in 1982, 15years ago. It indicates that there are obviously differences both in morphology and genetics between 霧社 and other populations above1000m height. Based on the information obtained from the morphology study, treat the 7 populations as Lilium formosanum Wallace var. price Wood, and 霧社 population as Lilium formosanum Wallace var. formosanum.
