The purpose of this study was to explore the public visual preference to different physical attributes of Yangmingshan National Park and to establish the visual preference predicting model. First, the area of Yangmingshan National Park was divided into scenic units according to mount ridge, cordillera and roadway, and then picked up 50 scenic units of high accessibility. The scenic quality inventory and evaluation chart of VRM(U.S.D.I., B.L.M., 1980) was used to investigate the physical attributes including landform, vegetation, water, color, influence of adjacent scenery, scarcity and cultural modifications. The surveyors were five graduate students with landscape planning background. And, the public visual preference was tested by color photographs photoed from the scenic units. The SBE method was used to convert the public preference values to the Scenic Beauty Estimates of every scenic units. ANOVA , correlation and regression analysis were used to test the relations between public preference and environment physical attributes, and then establish the scenic beauty predicting model. The findings are summaried as follows: 1.The three physical attributes, which include landform, vegetation and cultural modification, would influence the public visual preference. Though water, color, the influence of the adjacent scenery and scarcity do not have significant influence. 2.Generally speaking, those units ranking high possess high SBE value with those influential attributes. 3.In the established regression predicting model, cultural modifications, landform and vegetation have most influence to the public preference according to their extent of influence.
