For turf establishment and weed management , there were three experiments conducted in this studies:(1) to find out the adequate timing of nitrogen application based on the growth analysis of centipedegrass and zoysiagrass, (2) to evaluate weed control efficacy of the rate and combination of preemergence and postemergence herbicides in the centipedegrass, zoysiagrass and bermudagrass, (3) to know the rooting characters of those grasses from sod plug after transplanting as influenced by those herbicides which were previously applied in sod field. Results were summarized as follows:1. The growth of centipedegrass and zoysiagrass was slowly at 1 week after transplanting. Both grasses showed maximum relative growth rate (RGR) at 3 weeks after transplanting. The RGR of centipedegrass and zoysiagrass were 0.05 and 0.31 g g-1 day-1, respectively. The plant height of centipedegrass and zoysiagrass, 7.8 - 11.4cm and 2.5-3.5 cm respectively, is a reasonable field indicater for best time to apply nitrogen for those turfgrasses.2. At 8 weeks after zoysiagrass transplanting, weed coverage (35﹪) in N 80 kg/ha applied at 4 weeks after transplanting was less than 60﹪ in non-fertilized treatment and 70﹪in N 80 kg/ha applied at transplanting. At 8 weeks after zoysiagrass transplanting, zoysiagrass coverage(52﹪) in N 80 kg/ha applied at 4 weeks after transplanting was less than 24﹪ in non- nitrogen treatment and 28﹪in N 80 kg/ha applied at the initial transplanting.3. Results from the experiments of different herbicides and rates applied in bermudagrass, centipedegrass and zoysiagrass turf. It was found that weed control was above 90﹪ when tank mixed with pendimethalin + 2,4-D (1.7+1.6 kg/ha ) was applied in bermudagrass cv. 'Tifdwarf', oxadiazon +quinclorac (1.7 + 0.5 kg / ha) in centipedegrass and pendimethalin +2,4-D ( 1.7 + 1.6 kg / ha) in zoysiagrass. Turf injury rating of those herbicide combinations was acceptable .4. The rooting of bermudgrass plugs was not affected by the application of quinclorac + metribuzin + alachlor (0.5+0.25+1.5kg/ha) in bermudagrass in sod field 4 week before transplanting. However herbicide combinations reduced the root development of centipedegrass and zoysiagrass plugs ,the root growth of both grasses can be recovered 4 weeks after oxadiazon + quinclorac + metribuzin (1.7+0.5+0.25 kg / ha) combination in centipedegrass, and pendimethalin+prazosulfuzon-ethyl+2,4-D ( 1.7+0.15+1.6 kg / ha) combination in zoysiagrass.
