Some medical devices are used to monitor or maintain experimental animals in physiological conditions, while others are used for signal generation and data acquisition. One must pay attention if these instruments are operated manually. Moreover, further data analysis of the experimental data is difficult. To overcome the problem, a computer can be used to control the instruments and analyze data. In this thesis, two kinds of medical devices were computer controlled. One includes a CO2 monitor, a temperature meter and an infusion pump in which the RS-232 protocol we used for data communication, which the other kind of instruments such as a waveform generator and an oscilloscope, the GPIP protocol is used. To increase the number of channels of the RS-232 in an IBM compatible PC, a multiplexing interface card was designed. We used this system to carry out preliminary experiments of selective activation of C-fiber. From the experimental results, we conclude that this system is useful. An autonomic anesthetic control system in the future will be built based on this system.
