This thesis describes the design and implementation of a programmable processor for dynamic space warping algorithm( DSWA). This system integrated with Pentium-100 persinal computer through AT-Bus. It only takes 4.9ms to compute the minimum distance between 16*16 reference template and 22*22 input template, i.e. compute 204 times per second. The computation of this system is 98 times as fast as software simulation using PC486DX2-66 and 40 times using Pentium-100 system. Moreover, the local distance table of DSWA is based on Xilinx FPGA, and it can adapt different applicetion by modify distance table on line. Finally, applying developed system on two-dimensional template match, experimental results have shown dynamic space warping algorithm is a proper approach to efficiently solve each kind of distortion problem.
