The plaza in front of the main station ( station plaza ) is provided with transportation , environmental and disaster prevention functions , with undoubted importance . However , in view of the current situations of the domestic station plazas , they appear to be with traffic jam , insufficient space , and chaotic people and vehicle paths , etc . This cannot but make people doubt the role played by a station plaza , and what scale of a station plaza is required soas to conform to the demand of the station passengers and various transportation means . Next to it , whether there are planning and design criteria of the domestic station plazas to estimate the required area , if the actual supply situation of the magnitude of each domestic station plaza conforms to the basicrequirements , and how is the sufficiency level of the magnitude of a station plaza ? These issues are worth studying and discussion . Therefore , this study attempts to define the basic notion ( significance , classification , function and key factors of composition ) of a plaza in front of the main station , providing the planning procedure of a station plaza, factors of the supply aspect ( land acquisition , etc . ) and influential factors ( both qualitative and quantitative ones ) , to compare and analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the area estimation models of each type of station plaza . In addition , this study explores theormation of each station plaza , existing planning and design criteria , and performance through passenger survey for some railway and MRT stations .
