ABSTRACT A local-made single-screw extrude was used in the
3×6 factorial experiment, The objectives were to investigate
the effects of process variables (PVA ratio and screw-ditch
widths) on physical properties (moisture content, expeansion
diameter, radial expansion, longitudinal expansion and lulk
density), chemical properties (water solubility index and water
absorption index), mechanical properties (compressbility, spring
index, energy absorption of each cycle and total energy
absorption), and biodegradableExperimental results showed that
:1. Physical properties:Increasing screw-ditch width increased
the the moisture content, longitudinal expansion and bulk
density, but decreased the expansion diameter, cross-sectional
exption ratio. Longitudinal expansion increased with increasing
PVA ratio, however, moisture content, expansion diameter, radial
expansion rator and bulk density decreased with increasiing.2
Chemical properties:Both the water solubility and water
absorption indexes decreased with increasing PVA eatio and
screw-ditch width. 3 Mechanical properties:The compressibility
and spring index increase with increase screw-ditch width, but
decreased with PVA ratio 4 The PVA ratio is more significatly
then that of screw-ditch width for biodegradable property The
optimum operating conditions for producing the cushioning
material by using the single-screw extruder were 6.5mm screw-
ditch width and 15% PVA ratio.
