In recent years, breast cancer has risen as a leading cancerous disease among women. Breast cancer has very high survival rate if it can be detected in early stage. Compared with other tools, mammography is an effective and reliable diagnostic tool for the preventive examination of breast cancer so far. In America and Europe, many large scale hospitals have already begun todigitize the conventional film based mammograms through the aid of computerizedmedical image information processing techniques. But, the researches of digitalmammography are at the beginning stage in our country. The goal of this research is to establish a multimedia database systemof X-ray mammograms on local area network(LAN) by using client/server architecture. A prototype of image browser for the application of X-ray mammograms is implemented by using the object-oriented approach. It providesthe radiologists with not only patients' pathological diagnosis, but alsopatients' operative findings dynamically from any connected personal computer(PC) or workstation of the LAN. In this research, we firstly survey thefunctions and applications of Hospital Information System( HIS), Radiology Information System(RIS) and Picture Archiving and Communication System(PACS)for the references of the system design. We hope the proposed system will be obtained maximum effectiveness for those hospitals with a guidance of investing the medical equipment and manpower by setting up the digital mammography environment. Thus, a great promotion with better cure in the preventive examination and the computer-aided diagnosis of the breast cancer will be established.
