In the past before the 1960s, accompanied by the
development of technology, the Caucasians were the leaders of
the world. They relied on their military might to make a mistake
in applying their own cultural standards to other civilizations
by presuming all non-white races to be inferior. Thus, Chinese,
the colored race were involuntarily assumed to be "an other"
under the hegemony of the western world. Yet, in an American
democratic society of the 1960s, every colored race has its
privilege to exist as it is without necessity to live under the
white gaze. The minority groups should have their voice and need
not to be regarded as marginal others. Thus, Maxine Hong
Kingston, a Chinese American writer who personally encounters
the complex of being an other in her homeland, writes Tripmaster
Monkey, an ideological novel as a social protest for those ill-
treatments Chinese compatriots to fight against the western
hegemonic world. The protagonist in this novel, Wittman, is an
American-born Chinese, who is always "seen through" by the
whites like an invisible man living in this society in which
might is right. Although cultural hybridity which consists of
the western and oriental elements for him has already been a
fact, the whites only see his oriental factor while Wittman
tries to emphasize the western portion in himself. He faces the
important moment of making a decision in his life which is
either to live in dignity as a hero or to enjoy ease against
principle as a coward. This thesis is written from a social
approach to analyze how a "yellow skin, white mask" Chinese
American asks for his social political correctness. The main
body is divided into three chapters-first: "Under Western
Eyes", second: "Complex of Being an Other," and third:
"Sublimation of Self-recognition." First: how a person becomes a
victim of historical racial ideology will be protrayed; second:
what the psychological journey of being an marginal other
Wittman goes through will be analyzed; and third: the emphasiis
will be put on how he finally goes beyond the shackles of
western ideology and elevates his self-recognition. Although his
endeavor does not successfully reach its goal in the end, his
efforts to transform his marginal identity is itself gloriously
significant. These three chapters develop the main arguments in
this thesis. They present a journey in which a Chinese American
tries to get rid of the control of the mainstream culture and
assumes his own individual status.
