AbstractThe formation of building space has gone through a revolution over years. Earlier in the cave era, space is only defined between interior and outside. Later on, varies of minor defining elements such as horizontal dimension, vertical dimension, transparent quality of the material, transformation of position arrangement and transformation of transparent degree have come to the part. These changes enhance the space to exist in more than two states.Transparency, a simple concept, is one point of view to look at spatial definition. Based on this concept, vertically, we can examine how the spatial form come to develop, and what cause the change of spatial structure. Horizontally, we can understand structural factors of the spatial form at present time. Both observations lead us to the possible future direction. This paper is firmly based on the purpose of operational design. Through the view of transparency, three methods, which construct spatial layer, are applied to study the construction and transformation of the space. The operating methods are presented with sensory realization of transparency. Although there are other elements which are also important factors to the formation of spatial layer, for example, colors, light, material, pictures, or electronic media, etc, the methods applied here still lies in the domain of physical element. There are unlimited possibilities of spatial layer formations. however, that is not focused in this paper. What the paper concerns about the most is how the spatial layer is formed. To look at the spatial construction through the view of transparency, we can find that the layer and depth of the space has been increased with the interference of those minor- defining elements. Based on this concept, this paper is going to study three methods of spatial layer formation, which as the following:1. Association between the combination of minor- defining elements and the spatial definition.2. Association between group buildings and the spatial definition.3. Influence to the spatial definition when the state of defining elements changes. (I.e. combination, transparent quality)Above are the three directions when discussing spatial depth and spatial definition in the physical space. At the end of this paper, a series of residential designing cases are used to support the theory, which as the following:1. Spatial layer and visual depth caused by the application of minor defying elements and spatial union.2. Relativity between virtual and physical space caused by the organization of group buildings.3. Change of spatial construction and transparent degree caused by rotating wall and transparency adjustment.Keyword: Transparency, Transparent, Composition of Space, Cyberspace.
