ABSTRACT An Analytic Study of Urban Skylines based on Fractal
GeometryThis research is aimed to analyze the format and
composition of skylines from the urban landscape viewpoint, and
to avoid the subjective judgement of personal experience. In
recent years, fractal geometry, a mathematics theory concerning
format analysis, worked as a method of describing those combined
with irregular shapes but established by similar objects. Owing
to skylines formats have the characteristics of repetition and
similarity among fractal objects, they can also be called as
fractal analogues. Therefore, the research will experience
simulation and analysis of skyline formats by applying dimension
calculation and extended axiom of fractal geometry, and discuss
method of applying fractal geometry in order to explain
possibility of artificial structure. Once skyline formats have
been objectively described and established, the foundation for
discussion and analysis can be constructed, further to provide
objective evaluation principles of skylines construction.This
research is divided into three parts: 1. Observation and
abstraction; 2. Simulation; 3. Experiment and discussion.
Observation and abstraction: Observation is to understand the
construction of the skyline formats. Through observation, we can
find a phenomenon that is similarity among various fractal
objects exists in the skyline formats. Not only variety of line
in the one dimension exists in the skyline formats; they are
also combined with the two dimension (short, middle, and long)
in layers. Abstraction is constructing objective quantitative
and descriptive models of skylines. The discipline of
abstraction is using the method of simplifying sound wave and
transferring the skyline formats into original bar chart for
quantitative calculated and fractal extended, but the result of
abstraction chiefly comes from the construction of line in the
two dimension.Simulation: The fractal dimension can merely
discuss the relationship between the variation and value of the
skyline formats. Therefore, the operation of simulation is using
original shape obtained from abstraction to discuss the original
shapes and extended method of urban skylines. The scheme of
simulation is adopting L-systems and Turtle-geometry, and then
binding the relationship between original shapes of the skyline
formats and fractal dimension in order to construct primary
principle of the composition of the skyline formats.Experiment
and discussion: Experiment is according to the result of
simulated operation. Take Shinyi district in Taipei City as an
example, discuss the composition of skyline formats and modify
the computer stimulation.The conclusion of the research is the
skyline formats indeed have the feature of variation among
similar fractal objects in certain extent, and they also can
interpret and analyze with the concept of fractal dimension. The
relationship between fractal dimension and skylines in single
layer of skylines are whole shape, composed cube blocks and
detailed variation, but in multi layers of skylines are varied
with combination of layers. Under the variety of fractal
dimension, it can establish the relationship between skyline
variety and visual theory; on the other hand, it can provide a
primary descriptive method of urban skylines by combining
original shape extension with the control factor of variation
(height, volume, and principle). Hence, we can conclude more
complete variation and principle of construction in skylines
through observing various urban skylines of different cities.
The discussion also represents that the formats and construction
of skylines are predictable, and provides city design management
and examination with objective discussion in the future. Further
research lies in model description and extended ability of
dimension calculation, and then combines with the evaluation
systems to construct a more complete descriptive method of urban
