ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the failure strengthof several suspended ceiling systems often used in Taiwan. The first part of this thesis is to analyze the mode shapes ofceiling systems and perform time history analysis with SAP2000.Therefore, the dynamic behavior of different ceiling systems underlarge vibration can be observed and compared to experimental results. The second part is to exam damage testing of several full scaleceiling mode including non-bracing、 bracing and suspended strutssystems on shaking table, with or without some light fixture. Observations from this study are: 1. When Attacked by both vertical and horizontal earthquake, the strength of ceiling systems is less than those attacked only by horizontal earthquake. 2. The boundary condition is very important for strength of ceiling systems. Lateral stiffness of the ceiling grids will influence strength in the perpendicular direction. 3. Runners and boards near supporting edge fail more often than others4. Bracing system does not show better strength than non-bracing system in performed tests. 5. Although not having higher strength when loaded by only horizontal earthquake, suspended strut system has better strength when loaded by combined vertical and horizontal earthquake.
