In this thesis, structural damage detection analysis is studied with consideration of incomplete modal data available. In the process of damage detection, a two-step method in combination with a model reduction method is employed. In the first step, structural parts that are possibly damaged will be located using force balance method. In the second step, the extent of damage of structural elements will be evaluated using global optimization techniques. Regarding model reduction techniques, an independent mode reduction method is proposed, which gives better results for damage detection than conventional reduction methods do. Evaluation of the proposed model reduction method along with some conventional methods are made by considering damage detection of a simple chain model. Finally, applicability of the proposed method is demonstrated by damage detection of a large truss structure.
