AbstractThe purpose of this work is to systematically design new types of hub transmissions for bicycles. First, the transmissions for bicycles are introduced, defined and classified, and the target hub transmissions are described. Information, patents, the evolution, and the development regarding hub transmissions are collected, analyzed, codified, and predicted. And the performance and characteristics of hub transmissions and derailleurs for bicycles are compared. The QFD technique is applied to convert qualitative customers requirements into qualitative engineering specifications. Eight new concepts of hub transmissions are synthesized, and one concept is chosen for detail design. As a result, a prototype of the new hub transmission for bicycles is obtained. This new design improves the drawbacks of existing 3-speed hub transmissions. And, this feasible prototype provides a solid background for commercial mass productions.
