近年來，資訊科技在企業中所扮演的角色，已漸漸從過去支援性輔助工具的角色中跳脫出來，而成為企業在面臨競爭激烈的大環境時，不可或缺的競爭工具。在如此的大轉變下，資訊系統已儼然成為影響企業績效的重要因素之一。資訊科技已成為支援公司競爭策略中，一項重要的關鍵資源。從早期各單位獨立建立系統，到現在各部門間的串連與整合，資訊科技不再是單兵作戰的工具，而是全企業整合的策略思考；運用資訊科技就是為了能更有效率地管理公司既有的各項資訊。企業運用資訊科技為企業創造更大的競爭優勢，必須針對資訊系統的資源、策略和建置善加地規劃，而非再侷限於傳統資訊系統的角色，只從事簡單的資料處理工作內容。
回顧相關文獻發現，以情境觀點出發的資訊系統相關研究的主要議題多集中於：(1)情境變數－資訊系統變數；(2)情境變數－資訊系統績效；(3)情境變數－資訊系統變數－資訊系統績效等三個關係上。此外，國內目前在此方向的學術研究論文也顯不足。因此，本研究嘗試同樣以情境的觀點，完整的含蓋情境變數、資訊系統變數、資訊系統績效和組織績效等四個構念間的關係，利用驗證性(confirmatory)的實徵(emprirical)研究方法，以大規模的樣本資料搜集的方法來進行本研究。
經過資料分析，本研究的主要研究結果有三：一、組織特性中環境的「敵意」、組織結構的「正式化」程度、產品／服務和價值鏈中的「資訊密度」、「資訊系統的成熟度」，會影響到「資訊系統策略導向」程度的強弱；二、企業內「資訊系統策略導向」程度的強弱，會影響到「資訊系統的效能」的高低；三、「資訊系統的效能」不但對「組織績效」有正向的影響，同時亦扮演「資訊系統策略導向」對於「組織績效」影響關係中的「中介變數」。
根據上述結果，本研究提出三點建議給予實務界參考。包括：企業內資訊系統策略導向之定訂，應配合企業本身資訊系統相關能力；且應將企業所處的外在產業特性及環境相關的特性在規劃過程中加以考量；由於資訊系統對於組織的貢獻多屬無法量化的成效，容易造成企業在評估組織績效時，忽略了資訊科技和資訊系統所帶來的無形助益。因此，本研究進一步建議，企業在進行組織績效的評估工作時，必須同時將資訊系統所產生的貢獻考量進去，以使企業不致於低估資訊科技對企業營運的影響能力。
