The purpose of this thesis is to study the characteristics of high pressure sodium (HPS) lamp for dimming control. It mainly contains the following items: input power, output power, lamp voltage, lamp current, lamp equivalent resistance, lamp luminous flux, lamp luminous efficiency and system electrical efficiency, The main circuit is constructed by a half-bridge with series resonant inverter, Dimming operating is achieved by adjusting switching frequency and input DC voltage of the inverter. A prototypical circuit for the SYLVANIA LU 100W/MED HPS lamp is implemented and the experimental results are used to verify the theoretical predication and the computer simulation. In addition, the experimental results had shown that its lamp equivalent resistance could be varied with adjusting lamp power, The lamp luminous flus, lamp luminous efficiencyt, system electrical efficiency are 9940lm, 99lm/W and 91.8% respectively at nominal lamp power. The output power of HPS lamp could be regulated from 32W to 100W by adjusting switcheng frequency and from 42W to 100W by adjusting input DC voltage of the inverter.
