The purpose of this research is to investigate the present
condition of and the correlation between the junior college
students'' self-concept and career development needs, and the
differences on the two variables in view of different student
background.
The method of questionnaire survey was adopted in this
research to collect data. 915 boys and girls were selected as
research samples from the junior college students in Tainan area,
class as unit, by means of stratified sampling. The returning
questionnaire copies were 732. The research tools used here were
Chen Chin-i''s (1996) "The Scale of Vocational Student
Self-concept" and the researcher''s self-made " The Scale of
Junior College Student Career Development Needs". After the
test, all the data were processed with statistics such as t-test,
Pearson product-moment correlation, multiple step-wise
regression, one-way ANOVA, two-way ANOVA, etc.
According to the findings in the research, the conclusions
are as follows:
1. Academic performance, interpersonal relation and moral sense
affect the junior college students'' self-concept.
2. Junior college students have high needs in total and each
factor of career development.
3. Male, studying in industrial departments, or senior students
in junior college have better self-concept.
4. Female, studying in nursing or pharmacy department, or junior
students in junior college have worse self-concept.
5. Girls studying sursing or pharmacy have higher needs in
"social skills".
6. Junior college student''s background variables make no
significant difference on their total career development
needs.
7. Junior college student''s self-concept has negative correlation
with the factors of "self-understanding" and "social skills"
of career developmental needs and has positive correlation
with the rest factors of career developmental needs.
8. As to the prediction of self-concept and background variables
on career developmental needs, the factor "morality and
honesty" shows better predictability.
Based on the conclusions above, this research also provide
some suggestions as reference for junior colleges, parents and
related educational authorities.
