Evanescent-field fiber-optic devices have been continuous interests in academic and industrial societies. In the applications of optical communication systems. plannar lightwave circuits (PLCs) become hot subjects in key international conferences. In our laboratory, we had fabricated state-of-the-art side-polished fibers and demonstrated some passive plus active evanescent-filed fiber devices. In the thesis, we successfully made side-polished fibers including 0.633μm and 1.5-μm single-mode fibers using the same fabrication processes developed by our predecessors. These fibers were calibrated by the familiar formula. The integratoin of a side-polished fiber and a PLC is the ultimate goal of our research, we did. This was a primitive stage of the long-term research. The purpose of this thesis is to study the light transmissions between a side-polished fiber and a thin film. For simplicity, we deposited a photo resist thin film on the side-polished fiber and adopted a ray-optic analysis to qualitative investigation of the light transmission. From comparisons, we found good agreement between the theoretical calculation and the measurement. The present results show promising in realizing our goal and some further works are included in this thesis.
