本論文旨在研究喬伊斯如何透過《尤利西斯》一書之創作達到解放與重塑愛爾蘭人文精神之目的。首章為喬伊斯對本世紀初愛爾蘭文藝復興運動的批判，包括狹隘的國族主義與不切實際的回復古語之訴求。同時經由文化的雜混現象喬伊斯也剖析英帝國殖民的影響。次章討論語言與人類意識形成之間的互動關係，經由文化、歷史及意識形態等角度的分析來看語言的深層影響。第三章探討喬伊斯如何在語言表達法的創新的創新求變中找出呼應時代變化的精神來，亦即語言形式孕含了生活形式的變化。第四章研究隱喻如何成為貫的寫作標竿，從書名到各章的結構都足以顯示隱喻與本書欲凸顯的意義是息息相關的。第五章從文體的變化來看生活的節奏與文化的價值如何透過文體的不同運用彰顯出來。第六章則探討喬伊斯如何運用「他者」的策略達到顛覆與解放的效果。　　對喬伊斯而言，復興愛爾蘭的惟一途徑就是重新把愛爾蘭注入新的活力，使其在文化上改頭換面，以寬闊的國際觀來取代狹隘的國族觀。《尤利西斯》一書竭力揭發愛爾蘭人本身看不見的盲點，並指出因應之道。就此而言，《尤利西斯》所指望的解放與重塑愛爾人文精神的理想，已透過文字的表達確切地表達出來，對喬伊斯而言，文字的創作本身即已象徵解放運動的開始。
