This thesis aims to discuss William Faulkner''s representation of the white Southerner''s miscegenation complex in Light in August. Through the portrayal of an "alleged mulatto''s" identity quest, Faulkner reveals the white Southerners''s aversion toward mulattoes and their obsession with miscegenation in the Jim Crow South. In order to justify their antipathy toward mulattoes or "imagined mulattoes" and the fear of miscegenation, a miscegenation myth characterized by racial, sexual, and religious fanaticism is therefore constructed by the white community in Light in August. In this thesis, I propose a culturalist mode of analysis combining contemporary racial arguments with Freud''s psychoanalysis of religion to explore this miscegenation myth In Chapter One, I endeavor to provide some historical background in order to explain the antagonism against mulattoes and miscegenation. Chapter Two reveals how the white''s stereotypical beliefs generated by racial essentialism serve to form the miscegenation myth in Light in August. Therefore, to challenge this essentialism based on the contemporary anti-racist''s social constructionism of race constitutes the main focus of the latter half of this chapter. Chapter Three elucidates black-sex-crime association within the miscegenation myth. In addition, W.E.B. Dubois''s concept of "double-consciousness" is adopted to analyze Joe Christmas, especially his psychological rupture and identity crisis when he has internalized the black-sex-crime myth and tests it by oscillating between white and black women. Employing Freud''s psychoanalysis of religion, Chapter Four examines the religious fanaticism and the Puritanical principle of racial predestination incorporated within the miscegenation myth. The end of this chapter emphasizes the implied vision of hope and tranquillity presented through the symbolic resurrection of Joe Christmas. In short, through his tactful use of the miscegenation myth trope in Light in August, Faulkner lays bare and questions the prejudiced thinking and traditions of the Jim Crow South in terms of race, sex, and religion.
