The effects of soil media on trichloroethylene degradation by
phenol-oxidizingcultures which had been cultivated with
chemostat reactor at solids retention time of 4 days is
presented.Two types of soil were used for comparisons, the one,
Taikon, classfied as clay soil, and the one, Sofeng as sendy.
Results of batch experiments show that the TCE adsorption by
both soils was less signficantwher the Freundlich consrants of
Taikon and Sofeng were 0.0186 L/kg, 0.022 L/kg, respectively.
But the inhibition of phenol on bacterial respiration appeared
tobe more in the presence of Taikon than of Sofeng.As compared
to the control experiments without soil media, the presence of
soil gave little enhancement for the cultures to degrade TCE at
2.5 mg/L.
