Abstract In many researches on the simulation of transport of pollutantsin
soil, homogeneity of the vadose zone was assumed and the experiments were
designed to be homogeneous as well. However, the actual soil layer in the fie
ld is highly heterogeneous. Thus, to apply the models established based on th
e results of laboratory experiments to field systems, we have to con
sider the effect of heterogeneity , which should be related to the nature of t
he heterogeneity. In this research we assumed the size of aggregates in the ra
dial diffusion kinetic model , which determines the rates of the slow ad / des
orption and stands for the average size of soil particles in the past resear
ches, must reflect the nature of the soil heterogeneity. The sieved Hsi
n-ten soil is used to pack columns . Afterplacing toluene at the top
of columns , we extracted the vapor downward and investigated the transpor
t of toluene in the soilwith different water content and under different veloc
ity. The result reveals that the best-fitting size of aggregates differs from
each other. The best-fitting sizes of aggregates are within the range of soil
particle size of lower-water-content soil , so that the aggregate size in
the past researches has its physical meaning . However , the fitting
aggregate size is larger than the cutoff size of soil particles in higher-w
ater-content soil . High moisture blocks some inter-particle pores and in
creases the size of inaccessible area , that is , the aggregate size . W
e would define the scale of heterogeneity as the size of aggregatesrather than
the average size of soil particles. The in-situ soil vapor extraction(SVE)
experiment with SF6 as atracer is performed on An-keng farm in Hsin-ten . Th
e fitting aggregate size is much larger than the soil particle size. The sca
le of layering in situ is larger than that in lab and the fitting aggregate
size also has the same trend . It seems practical to take the heterogeneity
scale as the simulating aggregate size in consideration of the transport of p
ollutants in real world.
