Campus network management is a very different issue from enterprise network management. A lot of problems that come from campus environment can not be effectively solved by current network management tools. Two major observations for this are that most of tools are aiming at static glowing and well organized intranet world, and data captured by tools are not effectively mapped to nodes information which are constantly changed by the students in the open-world campus network. This research presented a Three-tier management framework for campus network and has implemented two application systems. The major functions of our systems are to integrate different kinds of data got from Oracle, Notes, and NetXray tool and then make good use of them to provide network health reports and some administration aids for large campus network. The first system is a node registration system built on Notes/Domino web site for solving the IP distribution and IP duplication problems. The second one is called as Web-based Integrated Network Tools System, implemented by Powerbuilder client-server development tool. From the administration view, the network users are divided into three groups: general users, department agents and computer-center administrators. Using Web browser, our campus students can use these systems to report network problems and provide most recently node information to department agents and administrators. All of these information are valueable records for mapping specific node inforamtion to top-10 talkers or trouble-makers of campus network. With the helps of our systems and some network managerment tools like Net-Xray and Sniffer, network managers may easily analyze the common network problems and do good jobs for administrating PC net in the fast-glowing campus network.
